What IS Tyvek?!

Very often people ask us what our Tyvek wristbands are made of.  It is a tricky question to answer without sounding cheeky because our answer can only be... "Tyvek!".  There is nothing else quite like it; it is what it is.  So, we thought we would share a little more information about this somewhat mystical, strong material.

How do I even say it?

The correct way to pronounce it is "Taiy-vek". We have heard lots of funny pronunciations and confused customers who chuckle at not knowing how to say it, but this is the correct way.  We have heard "Tivik", "Teeveek", "Tivak", "Tivex" and many more.  It's a bit like ordering food in a foreign restaurant, sometimes you just have to go with what you think it sounds like and hope it is right!  We will always know what you mean though. (^_^)

But what IS it?!

Tyvek is a brand of flashspun high-density polyethylene fibers, a synthetic material.  The material is very strong; it is almost impossible to tear but can easily be cut with scissors or a knife. This is why Tyvek is a perfect material for security wristbands. Water vapour can pass through Tyvek making it highly breathable; perfect if you are at a sweaty gig or club.  Liquid water cannot pass through though; making Tyvek wristbands very popular with leisure centres and swimming pools.

Some of Tyvek's properties are;

  • Light weight
  • Chemical resistance
  • Dimensional stability
  • Neutral pH
  • Tear resistant
  • Waterproof (yep, we tested it!)
Is Tyvek used for anything else?

Oh wow, yes!  Personally we think the best use is for wristbands but Tyvek is also used for clothing overalls, CD sleeves, envelopes, backpacks and housewraps. Yes.... house wraps.... (see below)

So yep, pretty strong stuff and certainly strong enough to withstand the wear and tear of a night out!
